Dr. Rui Zhao is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford. He works in the EWADA project (Ethical Web and Data Architecture in the Age of AI; https://ewada.ox.ac.uk/), led by Prof. Sir Nigel Shadbolt and Prof. Sir Tim Berners-Lee, with a close connection to decentralised architectures like Solid (Social Linked Data). His main research is centred around a) the connection between user autonomy and privacy-preserving computation, and b) facilitating data governance in decentralised multi-stakeholder contexts, through formal Data Terms of Use. Rui is interested in distributed/decentralised systems, formal modelling and reasoning, user autonomy, and balancing individuals' and societal collective interests. Before Oxford, Rui received his PhD degree from the University of Edinburgh in 2022, under the supervision of Prof. Malcolm Atkinson, where he worked on formal modelling and automated reasoning of data-use policies (/ data-governance rules) in decentralised research contexts (eScience). He obtained his master degree in 2017 also at the University of Edinburgh, and his bachelor's degree from Northwest A&F University (2016).
